Tsavo East & Tsavo West National Parks

Together, Tsavo East and Tsavo West form one of the largest protected areas in Kenya, a vast and wild expanse that offers a true sense of untamed Africa. Tsavo East is characterized by its flat, arid plains and the life-giving Galana River, which winds its way through the park. It is known for its large herds of “red elephants,” which dust themselves with the park’s distinctive red soil. Tsavo West, on the other hand, is more mountainous and scenically diverse, with volcanic cones, lava flows, and the crystal-clear waters of Mzima Springs. The combined parks are a stronghold for a wide variety of wildlife, though the dense bush can sometimes make sightings more challenging than in other parks.

Activities in the Tsavo parks are as diverse as their landscapes. In Tsavo East, game drives along the Galana River are particularly rewarding, offering opportunities to see elephants, lions, and a variety of other animals. The Yatta Plateau, one of the world’s longest lava flows, is a prominent feature to explore. In Tsavo West, a visit to Mzima Springs is a must, where an underwater viewing chamber allows for a unique perspective on hippos and crocodiles. The Shetani Lava Flows and the Chaimu Crater offer opportunities for geological exploration. Rock climbing and guided walks are also available in certain areas, providing a more adventurous way to experience the wilderness.
