Overview The Aberdare National Park encompasses a stunning range of high-altitude moorlands, dense rainforests, and bamboo thickets located in Kenya’s central highlands. This atmospheric park is characterized by its steep, forested ravines and open moorland, creating a haven for a variety of wildlife. The park’s ethereal mist and dense vegetation give it a mystical quality, often described as a “world of its own.” It is a critical water catchment area, with its two highest peaks, Ol Doinyo Lesatima and Kinangop, reaching altitudes of over 3,900 meters and giving rise to numerous streams and waterfalls that feed rivers across the country.
Activities The Aberdares offer a unique safari experience different from the open savanna parks. Game viewing is a primary activity, with iconic treetop hotels like Treetops and The Ark providing exceptional opportunities to watch wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, and the rare black leopard, from the comfort of your lodge, especially at night when the waterholes are floodlit. Visitors can also engage in guided hikes through the moorlands to witness the spectacular Karuru and Gura waterfalls, enjoy trout fishing in the cold, clear streams, and explore the landscape on scenic drives. Bird watching is also excellent, with over 290 species recorded.
