Lake Baringo

Overview Lake Baringo is a large, freshwater lake located in a hot and dusty region of the Rift Valley, north of Lake Bogoria. It is a critical habitat for a variety of fish, birds, and other wildlife, standing in stark contrast to its highly alkaline neighbor. The lake is home to a thriving population of hippos and crocodiles and is a world-renowned destination for ornithologists. Several small islands dot the lake, with Ol Kokwe Island being the largest and home to a luxury lodge.

Activities Birdwatching is the premier activity at Lake Baringo, with over 470 species recorded, including the rare Verreaux’s eagle and the Hemprich’s hornbill. Boat trips are essential for exploring the lake, visiting the islands, and getting close to the hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. Visitors can also engage in cultural tours to the nearby villages of the Njemps and Pokot communities to learn about their unique customs and traditions, including their methods of fishing.

Did you know? The Njemps people living around Lake Baringo are the only pastoral community in Kenya that also practices fishing.
