Lamu

Overview Lamu Town, on Lamu Island, is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place where time seems to have stood still. There are no cars on the island; transport is by foot, boat, or the ubiquitous donkey. The town is a maze of narrow, winding streets, stone houses with intricately carved wooden doors, bustling markets, and ancient mosques. The pace of life is slow and relaxed, offering a unique glimpse into a culture that has been shaped by centuries of trade and interaction between Africans, Arabs, and Europeans.

Activities The primary activity in Lamu is simply to immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere: get lost in the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town, visit the Lamu Museum and the Swahili House Museum, and observe the daily life. A sunset cruise on a traditional dhow is an essential experience. You can also explore the wider archipelago, visiting the quieter village of Shela with its stunning beach and sand dunes, or take a boat trip to the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island. Donkey rides, swimming, and relaxing on the beach are also part of the Lamu experience.

Did you know? The Lamu Cultural Festival, held annually, is a vibrant celebration of Swahili heritage, featuring traditional dhow races, donkey races, and Swahili poetry.
