Lake Elementaita

Overview Lake Elementaita is a small, shallow alkaline lake nestled between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. A UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Kenya Lakes System), it is a serene and picturesque destination that often feels more tranquil and less crowded than its larger neighbors. The lake is an important breeding ground for the great white pelican and is also visited by large flocks of flamingos. The surrounding Soysambu Conservancy protects a significant portion of the lake’s shoreline and its wildlife.

Activities The primary activity at Lake Elementaita is birdwatching, with the pelicans and flamingos being the main stars. Visitors can enjoy guided nature walks or hikes along the shoreline and in the surrounding acacia woodlands. The nearby Kekopey hot springs are a popular attraction, believed to have healing properties by the local community. Game drives in the Soysambu Conservancy can reveal Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, gazelles, and elands. It’s a perfect destination for relaxation and photography.

Did you know? Near the lake is the Kariandusi Museum, a prehistoric site where important archaeological discoveries of the Acheulean period were made by Louis Leakey.
